10. Killing Ground (2016)
- ⭐ IMDb Score: 5.8/10
- 🎬 Director: Damien Power
- ⛺ Vibe: Survival Thriller
This is a bit of a controversial one for me. This is not a movie that I enjoyed. In fact, I sort of panned it a bit. But it is a movie that gets a fair bit of attention and a lot of people do enjoy. In my opinion, it felt like it lacked plot and engaged heavily in violence for violence’s sake but it is impossible for me to ignore how impactful this movie can be. Killing Ground is Australia’s answer to Eden Lake, only a bit more shocking and with a more easily exploitable cast of characters.

Fans of gratuitous violence may find plenty to like, here. Horror is supposed to disturb and Killing Ground does just that. The Australian scenery is stunning and the movie is supported by brilliant acting. People who are averse to violence against minors may want to give this a miss. It’s slow, often boring, and brutal in parts. Not for everyone but definitely will appeal to some horror fans. Check out our Killing Ground review right here.
9. They Look Like People (2015)
- ⭐ IMDb Score: 5.9/10
- 🎬 Director: Perry Blackshear
- 🧠 Vibe: Psychological Horror
They Look Like People may be one of those movies that doesn’t appeal to everyone. Hence its position off this list that is ranking by IMDb user score. They Look Like People is slow burning, lacking in story, and very character focused. It is not a horror movie for anyone looking for scares and action. It is glacial and asks a lot of its viewers.
What it is, however, is a powerful study into the impact of mental illness and a touching depiction of friendship against the odds. Following the story of two estranged best friends who reconnect. What initially seems like a fun rekindling turns sinister as one of the friends is convinced that alien creatures walk the earth disguised as humans.

They Look Like People plays with themes of psychosis and altered reality in a way that few indie horror movies ever have. It is captivating and, at times, extremely unsettling. Loved by critics but received in a lukewarm manner by the public, this is one of my favourite indie horror movies and well worth a watch. It won’t universally please, however, so just don’t expect too much. Check out our review of They Look Like People right here.
8. American Mary (2012)
- ⭐ IMDb Score: 6.2/10
- 🎬 Directors: Jen & Sylvia Soska
- 💉 Vibe: Body Horror
Written and directed by Jen and Sylvia Soska and starring the fantastic Katharine Isabelle of Ginger Snaps fame. American Mary is a dark and witty body-horror with a keen sense of humour and a lust for blood.
Following the story of medical Student Mary. The movie sees our protagonist fall into an underground world of gore, body modifications and revenge. Nobody is more skilled than Mary at extreme modifications, but how long will she be able to maintain her sanity being part of such a twisted universe?
Awesome stuff and genuinely funny in parts. American Mary loses its way a little toward the end. Still, Isabelle’s fantastic performance and a seriously fun plot keep you engaged. It’s tremendous fun for much of its length and well worth checking out.
7. The Blair Witch Project (1999)
- ⭐ IMDb Score: 6.5/10
- 🎬 Directors: Daniel Myrick, Eduardo Sánchez
- 📹 Vibe: Found Footage
Are there any horror movies as synonymous with a sub-genre as The Blair Witch Project is with found footage? I’m not sure but it is fair to say that The Blair Witch Project kicked off an obsession with low-budget DIY horror that still survives to this day. Made with virtually no money at all but becoming an absolute box office smash, against the odds. It is hard to understate the importance of this movie to a flagging horror genre back in the late 90s.
While not the scariest movie and perhaps suffering from a little over hyping, this is still utterly worth a watch. It punches well above its weight and still manages a few decent scares even to this day. The Blair Witch Project is as important a horror movie as any from the genre.

The story sees a group of students getting lost in the deep woods while they are making a documentary about a local folklore witch. The Blair Witch Project follows a simple formula. Stick a few friends in the middle of nowhere, let them get lost and scare the hell out of them.
The film’s committed performances and some effective moments of tension keep you engaged, throughout. The movie has aged really well, all things considered. Now that the hype is a thing of the past, it can be appreciated for what it is – a great low budget horror full of innovation. Check out our review of The Blair Witch Project right here.
6. May (2002)
- ⭐ IMDb Score: 6.6/10
- 🎬 Director: Lucky McKee
- ✂️ Vibe: Quirky Slasher
Written and directed by Lucky McKee and starring the fantastic Angela Bettis. May is a weird and wonderful horror movie that is both disturbing and darkly comic. It’s a low-key favourite horror movie of mine and features Angela Bettis at her quirky and unique best.
Following the story of a veterinary assistance with a love of perfection. May quickly descends into elements of body horror as our leading lady attempts to assemble the perfect partner. Both gory and disturbing at times, it’s one of those horror movies that provokes laughter as well as feelings of revulsion.

It’s a strange movie full of the presentation oddities common with McKee’s films. It is also a difficult watch in parts but is sure to cause a few laughs. Loads of fun but maybe a little too weird for some. May is definitely worth a watch if you fancy something a little bit strange. Check out our review of May right here.
5. The Invitation (2015)
- ⭐ IMDb Score: 6.6/10
- 🎬 Director: Karyn Kusama
- 🍷 Vibe: Dinner Party Thriller
Now we aren’t talking about the 2022 version of The Invitation, that is a completely different movie and nowhere near as good as this one. The Invitation (2015) is a slow burning horror/thriller with an interesting cult-based plot and an intense ending. The story sees a group of old friends reuniting at a dinner party together after an invitation. Little do the group realise, the hosts may have a sinister ulterior motive for gathering them together.

This is a fascinating movie that plays on themes of grief, loss, and moving on from a tragedy placed against a back drop of cultist indoctrination and paranoia. The story is present from the perspective of a guest at the party who doesn’t trust the host’s motivations. The Invitation is a movie that is unsettling, discomforting, and actually rather shocking in parts. You’ll be very surprised by that ending. Check out our review of The Invitation right here.
4. Eden Lake (2008)
- ⭐ IMDb Score: 6.7/10
- 🎬 Director: James Watkins
- 🇬🇧 Vibe: Broken Britain
A British and French horror collaboration; Eden Lake is one of the best sleeper hits to come out of the UK in the 2000s. Gritty, brutal and utterly uncompromising, this is a movie that will likely stay with you long after you have finished watching. Definitely don’t throw it on to have a good time, that’s for sure. The story follows a couple who head out to a lake to get away from the hustle and bustle for awhile. Instead of fun in the sun, they find themselves victims of a cruel mob of murderous youths.

Depicting a horrific vision of Chav culture in the British isles, Eden Lake courted a lot of controversy for its portrayal of the working class which is very understandable. It’s not exactly glamorous. It can be a difficult watch, too but is incredibly effective in its representation of anti-social behaviour. Well worth throwing on if you fancy something a bit grim and very British. Check out our review of Eden Lake right here.
3. The Autopsy of Jane Doe (2016)
- ⭐ IMDb Score: 6.8/10
- 🎬 Director: André Øvredal
- 🕵️ Vibe: Supernatural Mystery
The Autopsy of Jane Doe is a gripping, intense, and incredibly atmospheric horror movie set in a coroner’s office. Following the story of a father and son team investigating the mysterious death of a young woman who seems to be hiding more than a few secrets.
This is a film that aims to boil the viewer with tension. It’s a mystery-horror bottle movie that unfurls slowly and gradually gets scarier and scarier as the secrets of Jane Doe come to the surface. In fact, The Autopsy of Jane Doe offers up some of the most tense moments in recent horror memory.

Featuring excellent performances from Brian Cox and Emile Hirsch. At its most effective, The Autopsy of Jane Doe is one of the creepiest horror movies around. Unfortunately, a milquetoast and predictable ending lets things down a bit. Still, this is a genuinely terrifying horror movie and well worth a watch. Especially for free. Check out our review of The Autopsy of Jane Doe right here.
2. Hellraiser (1987)
- ⭐ IMDb Score: 6.9/10
- 🎬 Director: Clive Barker
- 🧩 Vibe: S&M Fantasy Horror
If you are looking for a movie to take one of the top spots here, there are a number of options on free streaming services. Carrie, The Texas Chainsaw Massacre, The Babadook. Tubi, for one, is pretty stacked in that respect but I want to pivot from the obvious. The movie I am going to go with is Hellraiser.
Following the story of a woman killing to restore the body of her ex-boyfriend. Little realising that she is angering the group of demonic creatures he escaped from. Hellraiser is a classic British horror from the legendary Clive Barker.

Its themes of BDSM, adultery, and sado-masochism may not be for everyone. It split viewers on its release and still does to this day. But Hellraiser‘s slow, considered pace and brutal violence is still effective to this day. The iconic Pin head and his gang of Cenobites are a part of horror history and instantly recognisable. They remain terrifying in their motivations and, strangely enough, all the more compelling for their desire to follow rules. Check out our review of Hellraiser right here.
1. Saw (2004)
- ⭐ IMDb Score: 7.6/10
- 🎬 Director: James Wan
- 🪚 Vibe: Torture Thriller
Time for an early 2000’s classic to round out this list. I wanted something that was a crowd please to wrap this up and Saw has attracted the attention of Gen Z as of late. I think this is a movie we can all enjoy. Saw spawned a whole generation of sequels and spin offs and the series is still going to this day.
Focusing on the twisted games that the eponymous Jigsaw forces his victims to play. The first movie differed from its sequels thanks to its tight location and almost chamber-piece style of horror carnage. It’s just two victims talking together and trying to find a way out, for the most part. Saw also features an interesting plot twist that still has people talking today.

Terrible performances by Cary Elwes and writer Leigh Whannell do drag the movie down a bit, but this is still a tense, and easy to enjoy horror that is well worth a watch. Saw holds up incredibly well today and shows what could be done on a small budget. Check out our review of Saw right here.
