Obsession Hitting Streaming, Backrooms Backtracking, My G Fuel Powered Horror Marathon, & Stealth Streaming Drops
Welcome to Knockout Horror and to our weekly Cutting The Crap Horror News Roundup. It’s the second week of July and boy do we have a lot to talk about. With that in mind, today we are ranting about my all night horror binge fueled, quite literally, by G Fuel, Obsession hitting streaming imminently, some of the stealth horror drops arriving on your favourite service this week, and Kane Parsons backtracking on that Backrooms double dip just a little.
Okay, so some of it is a rehash of topics we discussed in last week’s news but I felt certain issues deserved a bit more scrutiny. Let’s go!
Table of Contents
Good Guy Obsession Comes to VOD with Extras
I just love Obsession so much (shameless review plug). Look, I’m a millennial but Curry Barker is one of the bevy of young filmmakers that leaves me thoroughly convinced that horror is in excellent hands with Gen Z.

Just when Kane Parsons pisses me off with the Backrooms double dip (more on that in a bit), Barker and the Focus Features crew come along and drop Obsession onto VOD with extra features. Apparently, viewers who purchase the physical release or the digital edition get Obsession Unleashed (which includes Michael Johnston and Inde Navarrette’s chemistry test) and a full director’s commentary track from Curry Barker as a tasty bonus.
Now, I have seen some of these extras floating around on social media but it is pretty awesome, all the same. There’s something delightfully old school about seeing a Blu-Ray with a proper commentary track and some behind the scenes stuff.
With That Being Said…
It would be remiss of me to not mention the fact that UK buyers who are purchasing Obsession from places like the Sky Store are finding that these features have been stripped out entirely. That’s really not cool, at all. Where you come from shouldn’t factor into what extras you get and, really, someone needs to sort that out posthaste.
Obsession is also coming to streaming at the end of this coming week, joining Peacock as part of their subscription based service. That’s fantastic for people who haven’t been able to catch it yet.
I should point out, however, that this will just be the basic release of the film. Don’t expect the behind the scenes stuff or the commentary track to be hidden away somewhere. That’s exclusively for people who put their hands in their pockets for the VOD or physical release.
What’s New On The Site?
We had a nice mix of articles on Knockout Horror this past week. For those who missed it, last week’s news is right here.
On the review front, we recently checked out migrant body-horror movie Slanted, the socially conscious killer kid Tubi original Hive, and André Øvredal’s disappointing recent movie Passenger (2026).
We also explained the ending to a couple of those films. You can find our Passenger Ending Explained article right here and our Hive Ending Explained article right here.
All of those links open in a new tab. Now back onto the news.
Backrooms Backtracking
As I mentioned earlier, I felt just a little pissed off with the whole Backrooms situation and the blatant double dipping that came along with releasing an extended version in theatres just a week after its initial run had ended. A24 pushed the Everything Must Go edition to screens to get one more squeeze of the lemon at a time when, frankly, people are really struggling for money.
Even worse, they announced that Backrooms would be coming to VOD just 11 days later on July 14th (today, in fact). That’s an utterly exhausting level of penny pinching that feels enormously counter to Backrooms‘ origin as a completely free YouTube series.

There’s no clarification as to whether the VOD release will feature the extra 15 minutes of added content from Everything Must Go but as soon as I know, I will update.
On the Plus Side
From interviews, I get the feeling that Parsons isn’t exactly switched on to the whole horror fandom and isn’t really a massive horror fan, himself. He’s more just a guy who is extremely talented and capitalised on something that was trending at the time.
His comments that the extra footage, that A24 were about to squeeze a few extra dollars out of people for, only took him two weeks to make in Blender seem incredibly short sighted, at best.
He does seem, at least, a little in tune with what fans want, however, as it has been announced that the extra footage will be going up on YouTube completely free any day now.
I am going to tell myself that he pushed and fought for that to make myself feel a little better about the whole situation. I don’t want one of the better horror stories of 2026 to be ruined by corporate greed.
Anyone Else Have Terrible Sleeping?
Honestly, is there any other genre that couples with terrible sleeping patterns better than horror? There’s something about sitting up watching horror at 4am that just feels right.
I’ve mentioned on this site, in the past, that I suffer from bipolar disorder. Along with that, I also have something called non-24-hour sleep-wake disorder. That basically means that I don’t have a typical circadian rhythm.
In other words, most people’s bodies assume the day is 24 hours long whereas mine is thoroughly convinced that you guys are all wrong and it is actually 25 hours long.
Left to its own devices, and without an alarm clock to interject, my body clock moves forward an hour every day. That means I wake an hour later and fall asleep an hour later. This will go on and on until I have been around the entire clock and the cycle repeats.

It mostly impacts completely blind people because they don’t perceive light in the same way as sighted people do. Some people, however, get it as a nice bundle package with bipolar disorder and that’s what happened to me.
It’s great; you get the insomnia from having mania and hypomania and you also get an irregular sleep pattern that makes hypomania and cycling far more likely. My fiancee has ADHD, as well, so her sleeping instant exactly stellar.
As you can imagine, this complicates day-to-day life enormously. I try to keep my sleeping sociable for as long as possible but, eventually, major fatigue kicks in and I have to forcibly reset it. I do this by pulling an all-nighter which absolutely sucks.
My G Fuel Powered Horror Marathon
Just this past week, it was time to reset things once again. We planned an all night horror marathon. I am not kidding when I say we live and breathe horror in my household. It’s a bit sad, to be perfectly honest.
I won’t bore you with all the details here but, suffice to say, we were in for a tough ride and you can read all about it in an upcoming article. The plan was to watch a few horror movies, play a ton of Resident Evil Requiem (review of that coming up, too), and then watch a bunch of Scream movies.
Luckily, we weren’t going in unarmed, this time. A representative from G Fuel contacted me and asked if I would be interested in trying some of their horror collab products.

I’m normally very reluctant to promote things on this website but I’d be lying if I said I wasn’t super eager to try out some of G Fuel’s stuff. Let’s be honest, too, us horror fans love us some merch and we all need a boost when we are planning our latest horror marathon.
I was sent the Jump Scare Collector’s Box and the Stab Stimulant flavour tub and, no word of a lie, I don’t know if we would have made it through without. Both flavours were seriously great and the caffeine boost helped tremendously without making me crash before sleep.
I’m a full blown G Fuel convert now and can’t wait to see more of their horror collabs in the future. If you want to read the full gruesome details, check out my review of the G Fuel Jump Scare Collector’s Box and Stab Stimulant flavour right here. Stealth Streaming Drops
Is it just me or did quite a few people miss a pair of absolutely huge streaming drops over the past week or so? Ready or Not 2: Here I Come just hit Hulu on the 2nd of July and I didn’t see anyone talking about it on social media. What’s the deal there? We explained the ending to that one if you are looking for answers.
Lee Cronin’s The Mummy also arrived on Max on the 3rd of July. This is a good chance to catch up if you missed its theatrical run earlier this year but don’t expect Brendan Fraser to be showing up wielding a shotgun. This isn’t your daddy’s Imhotep. A 45% Rotten Tomato’s score says you weren’t missing much, either.
I’m not surprised it was poorly received tbh. The trailer made it look pretty naff and the title really sets people up for something this movie just isn’t. You may be wondering why directing Hole In The Ground and Evil Dead Rise was reason enough to have this movie billed as “Lee Cronin’s” like he’s some pioneering horror auteur. The answer is, it’s simply a bit of legal string pulling.
This is not a Universal Monster movie!
In fact, Lee Cronin’s The Mummy is less “corpses wrapped in toilet paper tormenting people” and more “dark, depressing story of a child being possessed by something ancient”. The branding is pure window dressing.

In fact, it’s a rather cynical move by Warner Bros who are obviously terrified of releasing a brand new, original IP and so, instead, try to pull a two-for-one. They slap the “mummy” branding on it to trick audiences and then throw Lee Cronin’s name up there to push him as the next big horror directing name, all while avoiding the might of Universal’s grumpy lawyers.
It’s an average horror movie that’s only going to disappoint people expecting adventuring and pyramids. Still, if its included in your favourite subscription service, it doesn’t hurt to check it out.
A far more interesting drop is 2019’s Daniel Isn’t Real on Hulu. It’s a story about a man who has an imaginary friend who just so happens to be a complete lunatic. Arnie’s son Patrick Schwarzenegger stars as the titular Daniel and this one is a complete hoot.
Exit 8 also hit Shudder recently and, in my opinion, it’s a great J-Horror companion piece to Backrooms so go check out our review if you are looking for more liminal space craziness. Rupert Grint staring, Finnish folk horror Nightborn is coming to Shudder on the 31st of July, as well which should be a blast.
In Theatres and Onto Next Week
The big one this week is obviously Evil Dead Burn. I’m debating making the trip to the cinema to watch it but I’ve heard some mixed opinions which dampened my enthusiasm on a week where I am really quite busy. We’ll see.
Thanks for reading and be sure to come back next week for another horror roundup where I moan relentlessly about corporate greed and that type of nonsense.
