⚠️ Warning: Major spoilers follow below.
The Ending in Brief
The TL;DR: Laura’s plan to resurrect her daughter Cathy fails. She attempts to drown Piper to complete the ritual but stops at the last second when Piper screams “Mum”, reminding Laura of her own daughter’s humanity. Andy dies trying to save his sister, but his sacrifice exposes Laura’s crimes. Oliver (revealed to be the kidnapped Connor Bird) survives and escapes the property, breaking the demon’s hold over him.
Why did Laura stop? When Piper screamed “Mum”, Laura realised she was murdering a terrified child for selfish reasons. She accepted the finality of death and chose to save Piper instead.
What does the airplane mean? In the final scene, Piper hears an airplane. This references a story Andy told her earlier: airplanes carry souls to heaven. It signifies that Piper knows Andy has passed away and is at peace.
Did Andy die? Yes. Laura drowned him in a puddle after he discovered her plan. His death completes his redemption arc, proving he loved his sister enough to die for her.

Bring Her Back (2025) Ending Explained
We are going to get straight into this. I won’t make you sit through a drawn out plot recap. To understand the ending, we first have to unpack the mechanism that drove the entire plot: the resurrection ritual. It wasn’t just random spooky stuff; Laura was following a very specific set of rules.

How Does The Ritual Work?
Laura planned to conduct a ritual to bring her deceased daughter, Cathy, back to life. Based on the Russian VHS tapes she found on the dark web marketplace Black Angel Tapes, the ritual required three specific elements:
- The Corpse: The body of the deceased (Cathy, kept in the freezer) which still holds the soul.
- The Vessel: A living person to be possessed by a demon (Tari) to act as the transfer mechanism. This was Oliver.
- The Donor: A living body with the same physical affliction to receive the soul. This was Piper.
The “Soul Fingerprint”: Why It Had To Be Piper
The ritual in Bring Her Back operates on a strict metaphysical logic: you aren’t just moving a soul; you are transplanting an identity. To successfully house Cathy’s spirit, the new vessel must match her “Soul Fingerprint.”
This goes beyond simple biology. Laura didn’t just need a girl of the same age; she needed a girl who experienced the world exactly as Cathy did. Piper’s blindness was the key variable in that and not just a coincidence. In the film’s lore, the inability to see isn’t just a medical condition; it is an intrinsic part of the soul’s shape with both an emotional and a moral element.
By recreating the physical limitations and the exact method of death (drowning in the same pool), Laura was attempting to trick the universe into believing Piper was Cathy, allowing the soul to slip into the new body unnoticed.
The logic is pretty damn gruesome but very simple: The Vessel (Oliver/Tari) consumes the corpse of the deceased (Cathy), capturing her soul. The Donor (Piper) must then be murdered in the exact same way the deceased died. Since Cathy drowned in the pool, Laura had to drown Piper in that same pool to allow the demon to transfer Cathy’s soul into Piper’s body.

Another key element, the pool had to be filled by rainwater, not from a hose. Those were the conditions that Cathy died in and that is paramount to the ritual succeeding. When the ritual is complete, Piper would be gone and Cathy would be resurrected inside her body.
Why Did The Ritual Fail?
The ritual failed because Laura had a change of heart but it would never have worked, anyway. The ritual was doomed because Laura didn’t complete all the steps. The rules were strict, and Laura broke several of them:
- The Water: The pool required rainwater. Due to a dry spell, the pool was only partially full, meaning the conditions weren’t perfect. The pool was less than half full.
- The Vessel was Contaminated: Oliver was supposed to only consume Cathy’s corpse. However, due to hunger, he had eaten Andy’s father’s hair, part of the family cat, and a chunk of Laura’s arm. The vessel was impure.
The Mimicry: You Are What You Eat
One of the really scary aspects of the demon Tari, that kind of goes under the radar, is its ability to mimic the traits of whatever the vessel consumes. This isn’t just about satisfying hunger; it is a tactical tool used to manipulate and lure victims.
- The Cat: After consuming the family cat’s tail, Oliver is heard mimicking its meows in the bathtub, unnerving Andy.
- The Father: Laura feeds Oliver a lock of hair from Andy’s deceased father. Shortly after, Oliver manifests as a vision of the father to torment Andy in the shower.
- The Trap: In the finale, Oliver eats one of Andy’s fingers. This allows him to perfectly replicate Andy’s voice, which he uses to try and lure the blind Piper into his room.
Who Was Oliver?
Oliver was actually Connor Bird, a missing child Laura kidnapped on May 19th. She shaved his head and kept him captive to use as the vessel for the demon Tari.
Oliver’s “mute” state was actually a result of Laura pacifying the demon using techniques demonstrated in the video tapes. When Andy takes Oliver outside the property line early in the film, the demon briefly tries to escape, causing Oliver to convulse.

At the end of the film, when Oliver crosses the boundary line again, the demon leaves him. He is found by police and identifies himself as Connor Bird, surviving the ordeal (though with some gnarly mouth injuries).
Did You Know? The “Talk To Me” Connection
The Philippou brothers have confirmed that Bring Her Back takes place in the same universe as their hit Talk To Me. They jokingly warned, “Don’t buy a house in that neighborhood!”
As part of the viral marketing, the filmmakers created the website blackangeltapes.net. This site acts as the “Dark Web” marketplace where Laura bought the ritual VHS tapes. It features Easter eggs linking the films, and eagle-eyed viewers might spot Sophie Wilde (Mia from Talk To Me) making a blink-and-you’ll-miss-it cameo as an arm in one of the ritual videos. No, I didn’t spot it but I’m pretty poor with identifying a person by their arms. The less I see of Mia the better, as well.
Why Did Laura Let Piper Go?
The turning point comes when Piper screams “Mum!” while being drowned. This snaps Laura out of her madness. She realizes she is murdering a terrified child to save her own. It highlights the film’s core theme: grief can turn us into monsters, but empathy brings us back.
Laura sits in the pool with Cathy’s remains, accepting that her daughter is truly gone. She squeezes the wound on her arm as something of a coping mechanism; a physical pain to distract from the emotional agony of final loss. It’s quite sad but she was pretty damn nuts so… You know!
Behind the Scenes: The Scrapped “Scarier” Ending
The ending of Bring Her Back was originally going to be much darker. The directors planned a “bigger, scarier” finale where the ritual actually succeeded, and Cathy’s soul possessed Piper’s body.
However, this was scrapped after the directors’ close friend, Harley Wallace, passed away suddenly during production. The tragedy fundamentally changed their approach. As Danny Philippou explained, “Death is really unfair and it’s really sudden… People don’t get a resolution.”
They chose to abandon the horror spectacle for an ending that felt “true to life” – abrupt, painful, and final. The film is dedicated to Harley. It kinda changes the way you think about the movie, doesn’t it? I lost both my younger brother and my mum in the space of 5 months when I was still young. Death is indiscriminate, cruel, and depressingly final in a way that feels cruelly ordinary. Rest in peace to Harley Wallace.
Frequently Asked Questions
How did Wendy die?
Wendy, the social worker, was killed by Laura. After Andy alerted her to the kidnapping of Oliver, they attempted to flee the property in her car. Laura chased them down in her own vehicle and rammed into them, causing a crash that killed Wendy instantly.
Why was Andy on “thin ice” with the foster agency?
Andy was being monitored because he had struck Piper in the past. This violence stemmed from deep resentment towards their father, who was physically abusive to Andy (beating him in the shower) but loving and doting towards Piper. This history of aggression meant Andy had to strictly prove he was safe to be Piper’s guardian, giving Laura leverage to manipulate him.
Why did Laura kill Andy?
Laura drowned Andy because he wouldn’t give up on Piper. She knew that as long as Andy was alive, he would fight to keep custody of his sister (who Laura needed as a vessel). When he discovered the kidnapping of Oliver, he became a threat she had to eliminate.
What is the demon “Tari”?
Unlike the malicious spirits in Talk To Me, the directors describe the entity inside Oliver as an “angel” or a “genie in a bottle.” It isn’t inherently evil; it is simply a mechanism for granting a wish. It facilitates the transfer of souls, indifferent to the morality of the act.
Why was Oliver eating everything?
The demon inside Oliver needs to consume to maintain its hold and prepare for the ritual. Because Laura delayed the ritual (waiting for rain), the demon became insatiably hungry, leading Oliver to eat furniture, fingers, and flesh.
Final Thoughts: A Change of Heart
As I mentioned earlier, the ending of Bring Her Back was originally going to be much darker, with the ritual succeeding. However, during production, the directors lost their close friend, Harley Wallace. This tragedy changed their perspective on death.

They realized that death isn’t a puzzle to be solved; it is a finality to be accepted. The film shifts from a horror spectacle to a grounded tragedy about letting go. The dedication to Harley at the end serves as a poignant reminder that, unlike in the movies, there is no ritual to bring our loved ones back. We just have to keep living. It’s difficult not to feel sorry for Laura. She experienced something horrific and it fundamentally changed her.
I can’t help but wonder what that other ending would have been like and how it would have been received. They should have filmed it anyway and slapped it on the blu-ray. Ah well! Thanks for reading and stay the hell away from resurrection rituals.
