5. The Invitation (2016)

Now we aren’t talking about the 2022 version of The Invitation. That is a completely different movie and nowhere near as good as this one.

The Invitation (2016) is a slow burning horror/thriller with an interesting plot and an intense ending. Following a group of old friends attending a dinner party together. Only for something completely unexpected and horrific to happen.

Playing on themes of grief and cults. The Invitation is a movie that is unsettling and rather shocking in parts. Always entertaining and rather effective in parts. This is a movie that is engaging and well worth a watch. Especially for free.

We gave The Invitation a solid 7/10. IMDB users are almost in agreement with us scoring The Invitation an average of 6.6/10. Rotten Tomatoes was even more effusive with an 89% Fresh rating and a critic average of 7.7. Audiences scored it 69% Fresh with an average of 3.5/5.

The Autopsy Of Jane Doe (2016) Review

4. The Autopsy of Jane Doe (2016)

The Autopsy of Jane Doe is a gripping, intense, and incredibly atmospheric horror movie set in a coroner’s office. Following the story of a father and son team investigating the mysterious death of a young woman. This is a movie that aims to boil the viewer with tension.

Playing out as something of a mystery horror. The Autopsy of Jane Doe offers up some of the most tense moments in recent horror memory.

Featuring excellent performances from Brian Cox and Emile Hirsh. At its most effective, The Autopsy of Jane Doe is one of the creepiest horror movies around. Unfortunately, a milquetoast and predictable ending lets things down a bit. Still, this is a great horror and well worth a watch. Especially for free.

We gave The Autopsy of Jane Doe a solid 7/10. IMDB users, again, almost agreed with a score of 6.8. Rotten Tomatoes has the movie as 86% Fresh with an average score of 7/10. The users have it as 70% Fresh with an average of 3.6/5.

Saw (2004) Review

3. Saw (2004)

Time for an early 2000’s classic now. Saw has attracted the attention of Gen Z as of late. Seemingly appreciating the movie a lot more that some critics did back when it was released. The younger generation seem to get Saw and love its approach to horror. Saw spawned a whole generation of sequels and spin offs and the series is still going today.

Focusing on the twisted games that the eponymous Jigsaw forces his victims to play. Saw features an interesting plot and a twist that still has people talking today. It is tense, effectively creepy in parts, and always enthralling.

Terrible performances by Cary Elwes and writer Leigh Whannell do drag the movie down a lot. But this is still a tense, and easy to enjoy horror that is well worth a watch. Saw holds up incredibly well today and shows what could be done on a small budget.

We gave Saw a massive 8/10 as part of our first annual K-O-Ween 31 Days of Halloween Feature.. IMDB users almost agree with a strong 7.6/10. As mentioned earlier, this movie did not go over well with critics. Rotten Tomatoes awarded it a dismal 50% Rotten rating with an average score of 5.6/10. The audience completely disagreed giving it an 80% Fresh rating and an enormous average of 4.1/5. Considering I scored it an 8 and you guys score it in almost the same way. It really goes to show what critics know, right?

2. Killing Ground (2016)

This is a bit of a controversial one for me. This is not a movie that I enjoyed. In fact, I sort of panned it a bit. But it is a movie that gets a fair bit of attention and a lot of people do enjoy. In my opinion, it felt like it lacked plot and engaged heavily in violence for violence’s sake. But it is impossible for me to ignore how impactful this movie can be. Killing Ground is Australia’s answer to Eden Lake. Only a bit more shocking and with a more easily exploitable cast of characters.

Fans of gratuitous violence may find plenty to like, here. Horror is supposed to disturb and Killing Ground does just that. The Australian scenery is stunning and the movie is supported by brilliant acting. People who are averse to violence against minors may want to give this a miss. It’s slow, often boring, and brutal in parts. Not for everyone but definitely will appeal to some horror fans.

I gave this movie a terrible 4/10. I didn’t enjoy it and don’t recommend it. As I said, though, a lot of people enjoy it. IMDB users were more generous with an average score of 5.8/10. Rotten Tomatoes has the movie rated 74% Fresh with an average of 6.3/10. The audience strongly disagrees with a rating of 45% Rotten and an average of 2.9/5.

American Mary

1. American Mary (2012)

Written and directed by Jen and Sylvia Soska and starring the fantastic Katharine Isabelle of Ginger Snaps fame. American Mary is a dark and witty body horror with a keen sense of humour and a lust for blood.

Following the story of medical Student Mary. The movie sees our protagonist fall into an underground world of gore, body modifications and revenge. Nobody is more skilled than Mary at extreme modifications. But how long will she be able to maintain her sanity being part of such a twisted world?

Awesome stuff and genuinely funny in parts. American Mary loses its way a little toward the end. Still, Isabelle’s fantastic performance and a seriously fun plot keep you engaged. It’s tremendous fun for much of its length and well worth checking out.

I am yet to review American Mary but expect it to appear in our Halloween feature this year. IMDB users scored it a solid 6.2/10. Rotten Tomatoes has it a little lower with a 62% Fresh rating and an average score of 5.9. The audience was split with a 52% rating and a score of 3.3/10.
